Location - Alonso Martínez barrioPlaza Colón
This central plaza is dedicated to Christopher Columbus (Cristóbal Colón). Above ground you have a small park with the Columbus Monument, the Monumento al Descubrimiento de América and the biggest flag Madrid-Uno has ever seen - a massive great Spanish national flag which was erected by Aznar during his tenure as President of Spain (1996-2004). At the base of the Columbus Monument is a large fountain with a broad cascade of water with steps leading under to where the roar of the fountain is amplified and where the Centro Cultural de la Villa de Madrid can be found. At weekends loads of skaters and a few BMX tricksters congregate here to practise their moves - the smooth concrete and inviting ramps and rails make a natural playground for them. |
