Madrid Tennis Player Helps Win Davis Cup
Fernando Verdasco, a Madrileno, today (Sunday 23rd November) won the match that brought Spain 'La Ensaladera', the Spanish name for the salad bowl-shaped Davis Cup trophy, after a five-set defeat of Argentina's Jose Acasuso. He's had a good year Fernando, as he's also the newly installed boyfriend of tennis babe Ana Ivanovic. Verdasco was a last-minute replacement for David Ferrer, and he had to come from two sets to one down for a 6-3, 6-7, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory that took almost four hours. When Verdasco (the world No 16) struck his last forehand winner down the line he collapsed on to the court and was then buried under a pile of red-shirted bodies and the neighbours who live below flat started a mini-party. Maybe they're related?
Real Madrid 0 Juventus 2
Following on from Atleti's unfortunate away draw on Tuesday, the white half of Madrid were humbled at home on the Wednesday. The victory completed a double for Juventus over Real and left the Italians clear leaders of Group H. Real have now won just two of their last seven competitive games.
Liverpool 1 Atletico 1
Much grumbling this morning from the rojiblanco supporters following last night's Champions League match against Liverpool. What looked like an historic, hard-fought away win at Anfield was turned into a disappointing draw in the very final seconds when Liverpool's Stevie G tricked the referee into a dodgy penalty decision. Right now the English are not very popular here in Madrid.
